I wanted to talk to you about the concept of digital cameras: How they actually function and take photos. I’ll skip the technical explanation as much as possible but I want you to understand the concept so that you can actually take better photos in the future.

Let’s begin with the camera’s metering. The camera works by analyzing the brightness of the light from the subject and adjust the camera settings accordingly (If you are using automatic or semi-automatic modes). There are normally three metering mode in most digital cameras: ‘Multi-segment’, ‘Center-weighted’ and ‘Spot’.

‘Multi-segment’ metering enables the camera to meter the light falls on all parts of the sensor. This mode is suitable for wide-angled photography like landscapes.

‘Centre-weighted’ metering allows the camera to meter the light falls on the center bracket of the sensor. This mode is suitable for more focused photography like sports and portraits

‘Spot’ metering allows the camera to read the light falls on the absolute center point of the sensor. This mode is appropriate for discreet and isolated subjects like macro photography

Take advantage of these modes and read the desired light. Once done, lock the exposure compensation (this setting is available mostly in DSLRs), and recompose before capturing the photo.

Now that you know how metering works, let’s talk about the subject brightness range. Unlike our eyes, your camera sensor does not have a large brightness range over a subject. The maximum possible range is 9 stops. The sensor takes black as darkest and white as brightest. Therefore the neutral compensation of a sensor is called neutral gray. (On another related matter, this explains why sometimes it is advised to use neutral gray color as a reference for white-balance settings).

There’s a simple way to know whether the composure you make is out of the brightness range of the sensor. Switch your camera to aperture priority and use ‘Spot’ metering mode. Using a constant aperture, point your camera to the brightest region of the view and then to the darkest region. If the shutter-speed adjusts more than 9 stops, then the composure is out of range and the image will either be overexposed or underexposed.

This is when a photography technique called HDR kicks in. HDR stands for High-Dynamic-Range, and it is a photography method that allows the photo to extend to a larger brightness range. The procedure for this technique is simple. Take three photographs: one underexposed, one well-exposed, and one over-exposed. Then use software such as Photomatix Pro to merge the three photos together and generate the HDR image.

Don’t go crazy buying an expensive camera, but you’d better take a little time to find out what camera you’d like. Here are some basic photography technique of a camera.

Basically, all cameras are the same and, given identical film and settings, a cheap camera will take the same photograph as an expensive camera. More money doesn’t directly buy your more quality but more control over the image.

A camera is a box with a hole in it. You can make one out of a shoe box with a window of transparent paper on one side and a small hole in the opposite side. Physics teachers call this a ‘pinhole camera.’ Adding more controls, mainly to do with the lens, produces different types of cameras.

1. Disposable Camera.

These one-time use cameras are easy to carry and take surprisingly good shots. They are great for people shots at parties.

2. Compact Camera.

Perfect for snapshots. I like a small, pocket-sized camera with a flash (for people’s faces), a self-timer, a wide-angle lens (28mm for impact), and a panoramic mode (looks cool!). The downside to not having a zoom is that you’re limited to the lens provided.

3. SLR.

The choice of amateur and professional travel photographers. The Single Lens Reflex feature which allows the viewfinder to look through the main lens instead of its own fixed lens allows you to remove and replace the lens. Interchangeable lenses give you more creative control of your shot. You can make a super-wide shot with a ‘short’ lens, or enlarge a very distant object with a ‘long’ lens. You can also control the aperture (the size of the hole) which allows you to decide what is, and what is not, in focus. The downside to the SLR is that you now have more equipment to buy and carry.

4. Medium- and Large-Format.

These are bigger versions of the SLR camera which allow you to use larger (and thus higher resolution) film. Mainly used by stock photographers, the equipment is large and heavy and, therefore, inconvenient for basic travel purposes.

5. APS.

The Advanced Photo System (called Advantix by Kodak) uses a smaller film – 24mm instead of 36mm – which means the cameras are smaller and lighter. This is good for travelers. However, because the APS is new, there is currently a smaller range of equipment suppliers and film developers available.

There are many wonderful aspects to the digital photography revolution – but there is also one major drawback. Since we don’t have to pay for film or processing, we just fire away hoping to get a “good one.” Our digital photography technique leaves a LOT to be desired!

Too many of us are learning to settle for – let’s face it, downright bad photos. We think that since it isn’t costing us anything, it doesn’t matter. We think to ourselves that we will fix it in Photoshop. Unfortunately, for most of our photos, either we never get around to “fixing” it, or it’s just plain unsalvageable.

When you bought your camera, did you want to create beautiful, jaw dropping images? Or did you want to sit in front of the computer all day trying to repair substandard images!

The relatively low cost of digital cameras these days and the fact that there is no film or processing cost is slowly but surely eroding our photography skills. Before long, there won’t be many photographers left who can create a “WOW” factor image. Or even recognize one when they see it.

If you want to sharpen up your photo skills and take full advantage of the major benefits of digital (no film or processing cost) the first step is to take your camera off automatic. That one simple step will allow you to take one GIANT step forward with your photography.

On automatic, the camera is simply going to use the most middle of the road settings. The cameras’ goal is simply to get enough light onto the digital sensor – with a shutter speed fast enough to avoid camera shake. There is no allowance for creativity. There can’t be…it’s a machine not a creative being. That’s your job!

Since there is no cost for processing, etc., this creates a wonderful opportunity for you to experiment with all the various aperture and shutter settings. As you are shooting and trying new experiments, write down your results in a shot notebook. It won’t be long, generally within days – before you’ll start to see amazing improvement in your photography.

Don’t be surprised if all your friends come to you for advice on THEIR digital photography technique. Try it, you’ll like the results! Before long, your notebook will be one of your more prized possessions! Each time you make a new creative discovery, you will have a record of it and can refer back to your notes whenever you want to duplicate that digital photography technique.

Virtually any musician older than 35 understands the steps you will need to undergo in the move from analog to digital. Every person interested in sound in the early 90s went through the agonizing process of comprehending just how recording to digital tape and hard disk was different from recording to an eight track cassette tape or to half-inch Ampex tape. When you proceed to digital, all the things change with the manner you make use of a mixing console. Your old EQ curves don’t make very much sense any longer, the microphone positions you’ve learned all change, and digital sound on a CD (remember them?) never sounds as warm and as saturated as vinyl right up until you discover how to tailor the recording process to digital tech. People felt exactly the same thing going from black and white film to color, and it’s really kind of the same thing in the transition from taking photos on emulsion covered film to all-digital. Your results at first may in some manner feel much less satisfying than the old images you were always accustomed to, however, if you learn the digital photography techniques you need to, you can only get far exceptional results.

Camera shake has always been a challenge that amateur photographers have had issue with – digital or analog. The particular thing with digital cameras is that they have big displays that you can see your composed shot on, from arm’s length. You don’t need to hold the camera up to your left eye in which the support of your hands along with your brow might help with the stableness. A digital camera therefore requires that you grasp with both your hands in the event that you do not have a tripod. Even when your frame composing technique does not require it.

Certainly one of the most confounding areas with modern cameras that need new technique is shutter speed. Digital photography techniques need new knowledge in terms of how you manage the sensitivity of the sensor. In conventional film, ISO 800 was film that react eight times as fast as ISO 100. An ISO 800 was also a lot grainier than ISO 100. In digital photography, it’s the same sensor with similar number of megapixels, no matter what sensitivity is. Nevertheless, you’ll still have the exact same kinds of outcomes – only now a faster shot has something called photo noise, and not really grain. And photo noise actually is a lot more bothersome to look at compared to grain as well. The default in a digital camera therefore needs to be 100 ISO for the crispest shots in most situations.

If utilizing the auto mode for the exposure environment just isn’t specifically the way you like, overriding it and capturing photos at higher sensitivity lets you capture quicker photographs in good light. You’ll typically have to do this when you are attempting to take a great shot during an indoor sporting event in which there is fast action, and not much light. You may also need to do this at a concert where you are not permitted to make use of your flash.

Let us talk a little now about the digital photography methods involved with setting the aperture – which is the size the shutter will open to once you push the button. They measure aperture size through a unit called f-stop. You will generally see settings for f/2.8, f/5.6,f/22 and many others. It’s a logarithmic scale – every step up basically increases the amount of light let through. The bigger the amount, the less the light that is let through.

Therefore exactly why would you want to alter your camera’s aperture? Actually, it has a fantastic impact on the area of your picture that’s in sharp focus – an attribute they name depth of field. The bigger your aperture, the smaller your depth of field. If you wish one of those fantastic effects in which just your key point of focus is sharp and the background fairly blurred, utilizing a huge aperture and a shallow depth of field is the best trick. You do not necessarily use only lenses to do this effect. You may also set your aperture the right way. And also auto mode normally, will be able to help you here.

Reading books, attending workshops and browsing the Internet are all good things that can help you take better photos. Read the following tips, they will improve the way you create amazing photos and how you see photography.

Know your camera -Your camera has lots of features that most photographers including yourself never use, maybe not even know they exist or what they are for. Aperture, shutter speed and focus are fundamental and very important, but they many more that can help you be a better photographer and spend less time retouching and fixing your average photos. There are functions like multiple exposure, time lapse, mirror lock-up, metering and many others. Take your time to learn about them and get creative. Creativity will change your photography. Do you know where your camera’s manual is? Time to take it out, go through it, experiment with each function and learn what you can create. You’ll be amazed.

Take your camera into your room and turn off the light – Literally follow this instruction go into any room in your house and turn off the light, grab your camera and lets see how much your actually learn about it. Sit down and change the shutter speed, the mode, aperture, ISO, focus mode, etc. If you can actually do this is because you really followed the first tip and you know your camera well enough.

Enter photography contests – This is a fun activity and a great way to learn. Look for contests that will actually provide critique and feedback. There are many contests out there that decide on the winner by how many friends you convinced to vote for your photo. But there are also some great photo contests, just spend some time looking and finding them.

Choose your best 25 images and have friends rate them – Print your 25 best images and place them on a flat surface. Ask each of your friends to order them from their favorite to the one he or her likes the least. When they are finished ask them why they placed them in that order. You will be shocked at some of the comments and how people that are not into photography view things. Their comments will help you understand some concepts that will help you improve.

Choose a couple of pictures that you like from sites like flickr and 500pix – When you are done, compare them, analyze them and critique them. See what you like the most and why? Look closely and see what they have in common, look at the metadata and find out how they were shot and the settings used. Think about why they used those settings and what would have happened if the settings were different.

Join a photo club and go out with your photo buddies – Photography is lots of fun when you can share the experience with others. Look for local photographers, or a local photo club and plan outings. Going out with several photographers allows you to experiment with other cameras, with new lenses, learn new techniques and practice new tips. It’s fun and a great way to learn.

Learn a new photo technique at least every week – There are many different techniques out there and nowadays it is very simple to find them and to learn from them. Google “Photography Technique Tutorial” and you will find thousands of them. If you are very visual use the ones in Youtube, they will guide you step by step. Another great resource is Google+, the amount of photographers participating is growing every day and the tips are awesome. After you see them or read about them go out and take a couple of shots using the technique you just learn. Practice makes perfect!

Shoot night photography – Shooting night photography is probably the best way to learn photography. Automatic does not work. You have to learn how to balance ISO, aperture and shutter speed. You are forced to use a tripod and by doing so you learn how to use it properly and reinforces proper shooting techniques. You will also learn how to focus on the light. At the end you will be rewarded with amazing images.

Learn as much as you can – Research, ask, practice and most important cover a wide range of topics and learn about different styles of photography. After you’ve done that you will probably know by then which style you prefer the most. When you do, dig deeper, learn and specialize yourself, there is a lot to learn. When you become real good at one style, sit down, relax and decide what’s next. Start learning a different style, it will be a completely different experience and you will love it.

Show-off your work – There is no better feeling than someone commenting on your image and liking it. There are many ways in which you can show-off your work. Post it online, for example in smugmug, here you can have your own mini-website and share your work. Enlarge, print a couple of your images and hang them at home or at the office. Build a photo page of your work in Facebook. There are many options and at the end you will feel proud of your work and motivated to do better.

Whenever I go out on a photo shoot I enjoy include as much colour and as bold as possible. Colour is more important to our worlds than we believe and it is often taken for granted. Although monochrome photos are wonderful, there is more to colour photography than we believe. Several techniques learnt will add a dramatic dimension for your images.

As with every photography you have to always think before you shoot an image. Take time to ponder the scene and work out what works in the composition. Look at what colours are available and where they’re, just how much colour to incorporate and the way to use it. By applying quick and easy techniques you images is going to be admired and result in great satisfaction for you personally.

1. Utilizing a single colour

This is a great way of a bold photograph. By isolating a colour or at the very least making it the dominating colour you create images that are bold and dramatic. Answer to this really is finding objects or scenes which have just one colour yet make an effective composition. Enter closer to the subjects isolating from their surroundings and making the colour the focus.
